Dr. Madhura Tamhankar is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. Fellowship trained in Neuro-ophthalmology, she serves as a tertiary referral specialist for patients with complex neuro-ophthalmic disorders, receiving referrals from neurosurgery, neurology, endocrinology, rheumatology, ophthalmology, and general medicine. In addition to her neuro-ophthalmology practice, Dr. Tamhankar is an adult strabismus surgeon with a large regional referral base. She also co-directs the Thyroid Eye Disease Clinic in collaboration with the oculoplastic service. The multidisciplinary clinic serves as a major referral center for patients with complex thyroid eye disease, offering comprehensive medical and surgical management as well as access to clinical trials evaluating emerging therapies. Dr. Tamhankar's clinical research focuses on thyroid eye disease, giant cell arteritis, and ischemic optic neuropathy. She has served as principal investigator on multiple multicenter clinical trials evaluating novel treatments for ophthalmic diseases. She is an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, serves as Chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's committee for the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS), and is a scientific advisor to pharmaceutical companies developing therapies for thyroid eye disease and ischemic optic neuropathy.
